Originating in Japan, Gemba Walk is a continuous improvement approach that aims to identify the positive behavior to be reinforced and the problems that need correcting, within the context of direct communication between top management and the operational teams in the field. It is about gathering the impressions, opinions and ideas of employees by regularly visiting the sites in question in order to improve their everyday work environment.
A principle that İzocam, as a leader in the insulation market in Turkey and the Middle East, established in March 2022 to enhance its health, safety, energy and environmental performance. A dedicated team has been set up and trained, and Safety Gemba Walks have been scheduled on each site at least once a year. They have now been used to identify certain risks such as the absence of protective devices on several machines, a lack of safety-related signage, a failure to comply with safety requirements for lifting equipment, interactions between pedestrians and vehicles, etc. but also to immediately put in place corrective actions and heighten general safety across all sites.
The visits have also revealed unsuitabilities relating to energy consumption and the environment. Each unsuitable found is put in order of priority and the corrective action implemented is monitored by management as part of a continuous improvement process.
In other words, the goal is to create a virtuous circle of constant progression for the shared benefit of the company and its employees. The Gemba Walk allows problems to be spotted quickly and good practices to be identified, shared and improved, relying on collective intelligence and developing employee engagement by acknowledging their contributions.
