Emphasizing the contributions of insulation to the country's economy and the environment during the Energy Saving Week, İzocam General Director Murat Savcı drew attention to the importance of the right insulation practices and warned, “We are heating the outdoor environments instead of the indoor environments due to uninsulated or poorly insulated buildings!”.
İzocam, Turkey's well-established and experienced insulation brand, drew attention to the contributions of insulation to the country's economy and the environment during the Energy Saving Week held between January 11th and 18th every year. Stating that insulation applications will reduce energy costs and, in parallel, carbon emissions will decrease significantly, İzocam General Director Murat Savcı warned, “We are heating the outdoor environments instead of the indoor environments due to uninsulated or poorly insulated buildings!”.
Emphasizing that correct insulation practices are of critical importance for our economic development and energy saving, İzocam General Director Murat Savcı stated that the insulation industry fulfills a national duty in this regard.
Noting that Turkey's energy import bill for 2023 was approximately 69.1 billion USD dollars, Mr. Savcı continued his words as follows: “There are over 9 million buildings and over 22 million households in Turkey, and approximately 85 percent of these buildings function as residences. Approximately 35 percent of the total energy consumption in our country is used in buildings, and 80 percent of this energy is consumed for heating or cooling purposes.” Stating that the our average natural gas consumption per household was 984 m3 and our average electricity consumption per household was 3000 kWh in 2022, Mr. Savcı said: “If a house is insulated in accordance with current legislation, approximately 325 m3 of natural gas that would otherwise be used for heating and approximately 1050 KWh of electrical energy that would otherwise be used for cooling would be saved annually. In other words, although we have the opportunity to save 1/3 of our energy consumption by simply insulating our buildings, uninsulated or poorly insulated buildings cause serious heat losses and, as a country, we are heating the outdoor environments instead of the indoor environments.”
Stating that thermal insulation applications insulate our living spaces by protecting them from heat as well as the effects of cold, Mr. Savcı said: “Insulation, which minimizes the cost of heating in cold winter days, also allows us to save energy associated with the use of air conditioning in the sweltering summer months. Considering heating and cooling together, the amount of savings to be achieved is approximately 0.73 tons of oil equivalent (TOE). In order to spend the summer months as comfortably as the winter months, it is essential that the roofs and walls of the buildings are also insulated.”
What should the right insulation be like?
Stating that insulation is a serious investment that needs to be made to achieve savings and comfort, İzocam General Director Murat Savcı said: “Insulating with the right insulation material with the right thickness using the right application method provides the best return and highest comfort throughout the life of the building. Even with minimal insulation to meet the regulatory requirements, more than 60% energy savings can be achieved in a building compared to an uninsulated building.
It is of great importance that consumers are informed in detail about the right insulation materials and the right insulation application methods before having thermal insulation. Right insulation in the context of thermal insulation refers to applying insulation using appropriate materials with the right thicknesses, as specified by the regulations, by taking into account the fire risk, flammability load and sound insulation values of the buildings. Insulating with the right insulation materials with the right thicknesses using the right application methods will provide the best return and highest comfort throughout the life of the building. While right insulation increases the value of buildings and residences, it also increases the living standards of cities and contributes to the country's economy.”
